I understand that that kind of gameplay appeals to some people, but it's definitely not my idea of a good time.. All your games 2 easy? well get your ballsack ready because Oniken will♥♥♥♥♥♥you NES style. 7 Burgers out of 5. Reminiscent of old NES classics, Oniken is a tough-as-nails game which relies on twitch action and pattern memorization. And, well, it's pretty damn fun! It's really hard on your first way through, but learning the stages bit by bit is one in a whole part of the fun.If you like the kind of old-school game in the vein of Ninja Gaiden, Shinobi and Castlevania (or even modern classics like Super Meat Boy), you'll probably like this one.. This game is good. SMASH ROBOTS!. this is the first game i've ever reviewed, and i almost didn't cause write this cause i was/am so enamored with this game. anyone born in the 80s-90s will love this game, hands down. it reminds me of contra 3 alien wars from the snes, and i was obsessed with that game for most of my childhood. i watched Northerlion's let's look of this game, and i was basically immediately sold on it. god damn amazing. can't recommend this enough.. I think the game was inspired by games like ninja gaiden a bit too much , the levels are punishing with pretty much undodgeable attacks unless you got hit once and now know they're comming, the first boss fight is pretty dull, the only way to beat it is to save grenades, have a sword upgrade or damage boost. speaking of damage boosting, i was never really a fan of getting knocked back when i get hit, especially when the thing hitting me can't be attacked (rocks after the first boss, sure you can slice them... when they come to your sword level, but since you can't attack upwards it doesn't really help now does it.). especially when you're platforming over an instakill pit. oh and btw , no checkpoints, if you die at boss you gotta replay the whole stage again. The only redeeming quality i can say it has is that i like it's artstyle. i might revisit the game in the future, but for now this is my oppinion. I have mixed feelings about retro style games that are mere copycats from the golden age of video games. I get the nostalgia aspect, but the odd reality is that I cherish the memory of playing those old school games more than I actually enjoy playing them today. When I do play them, it's an immediate reminder of where games are today and how far along games have come and why products have advanced the way they have. While old school games were considered technically superior in their time, they are considered technically inferior today. In fact, most games of yesteryear made the most of the technology available to them. So designing a technically inferior product today, on purpose, is not that impressive to me.Many great old school games are classified as abandonware and the ROMs and emulation software can be easily found to play them for whatever gaming system you cherished the most. Find them, play them, and try to enjoy them the same way you did 30 years ago. I've tried, but it's not the same. Reflecting on the memories of playing them gives me more pleasure.Oniken is a good copycat from an era gone by, nothing more, nothing less.. This is a slick throwback game, with very tight controls and challenging level design. It is meant to be played a certain way and it teaches you the proper way to play along the way by killing you repeatedly. If you die in this game it is your fault, which is part of the learning curve. They did a good job of simulating the NES difficulty from back in the day, but without the sluggish controls that plagued many games from that era. Protip: Read the manual to learn the secret technique to beating time trials. Overall if you love retro style games I would also recommend picking up the Oniken + Odallus combo back as both games are excellent and made by the same studio.. Excellent NESdie game, very authentic to the roots of 8-bit era with modern gameplay !8/10. Ive only play this game for a short amount of time but I must say its a love letter to classic Ninja Gaiden gameplay. The challenge and struggle is real and that just makes it all the better for catching your attetion and its replayability . The controls are smooth and flluid and the simplicity really compliments that. All in all its amazing and its only $8.00 !
